Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

I am upgrading my hard drive and looking to install XP on my Inspiron E1505 notebook and would like to use XP's 64 bit version. I've read, though, that good drivers can be hard to come by. Dell's driver page for the E1505 show XP and Vista 32 in the dropdown menu but I can't find information about using XP64. In short, can I install XP64 and if so, where does one find the necessary drivers?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

You can install the 64 bit OS, but why would you ?

XP 64 bit version is more problematic then the Vista 64 bit version and you would have to hunt down drivers for the hardware you have on the system.  Seems that would be just asking for trouble and not worth it in my opinion.

Re: Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

Hello SR45:

I appreciate your help and your answering my first question (can I use XP64 on the E1505?). But rather than debating the merits of one OS over another, what would be most helpful is any information anyone might be able to share about where I might find XP-64 drivers for the E1505.

Thanks!

Re: Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

Hi

You will need .

R171789.exe sound XP32\64 Bit from your download page

R168331.exe Ricoh from Precision m 90 or m 6300

R131033.exe modem from  Pre m90 or m65

R151519.exe wireless from Pre m20.m65,m70,m90

Ethernet from Broadcom.com as a zipped info file .

The other drivers like Video and chip set is going to be hard to find

if you can even find a driver that will work .

The chip set may come from Intel if it even works.

Then you will need a floppy drive to install it

yes it will be hard to get XP 64 bit to work on your E 1505!!

This is all i can help you with .

Good Luck

Re: Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

Excellent. Thank you very much. This is at least a good start. I will try to see what I can find for those other drivers.

If anyone else has suggestions for video or chip set, I'm all ears.

Again, I really appreciate your assistance!

Re: Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

Hi

Your Welcome .

You can look at the business line of Dell computers and see if they run XP 64

then look at the hardware list and see if they have drivers for the chipset and video .

Check the XPS line also you might get luck somewhere .

Good Luck

Re: Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

The 32-bit XP drivers for teh E1505, in the order it is recommended they be loaded, is:

  •    Dell™ Notebook System Software
  •    Mobile Intel® Chipset Driver
  •    Intel® 945GM/PM or ATI™ Mobility™ Radeon® X1300 / X1400 Video Driver
  •    Ricoh® Media Card Reader Driver
  •    Broadcom® 440X 100/100 Integrated Controller
  •    Wireless Mini-Card driver (if applicable)
  •    SigmaTel® STAC 9200 Audio Driver
  •    Modem (MDC) driver
  •    Bluetooth® driver (if applicable)
  •    Synaptics® TouchPad™ Driver
  •    QuickSet utilities

I wish I could be more help on this but, unfortunately, we never shipped the E1505 with a 64-bit OS so I have never had an opportunity to deal with it set up that way.  Hopefully this will at least help you find some of the drivers you need.

For anyone that finds this looking for a 64-bit QuickSet that works on the mm061 (Inspiron 6400 / E1505, in my case), I was able to get

to install on Win7 x64.

Re: Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

Hi

Just to let you know, the 64 bit version of XP won't work much better than the 32 bit version of XP on this system. The chipset limits the RAM to 3.3 Gb and the upper limit for the 32 bit OS is 3.24 Gb so there is no benefit of installing XP 64 bit.

However when looking for the drivers, it is sometimes useful to look at the existing drivers (in this case the 32 bit XP drivers, looking at the compatible systems and seeing what one of they systems have 64 bit drivers, note some drivers are for the 32 and 64 bit). At quick glance I can find but would need to do some hunting for the rest.

1. Dell Notebook Software: R143625

2. Chipset (Intel): R114079

3. Chipset (Ricoh): R168331 (As C3PO5 said)

4. Video (ATI):

5. Conexant: R131033 (As C3PO5 said)

6. Broadcom: Broadcom.com (As C3PO5 said)

7. Audio: R171789

8. Touchpad

9. WLAN Card: R151519  (As C3PO5 said)

10. Quickset: R166695

11. Bluetooth (355): Can't find but would try the 360 driver here (I use the 370 driver for windows 7)
