You should be able to use the cd from the newer Dell . . if it asks for the COA, use the one from the machine you are installng on.  That halt is usually caused by failure to disconnect all external peripherals except the keyboard and mouse, or a USB device attached, or a wireless keyboard/mouse.

Did you delete and recreate partitions?

The only peripherals connected are the keyboard and mouse, however, there is an internal DVD/Rom drive. The keyboard/mouse are both wired; the mouse is USB, the keyboard is not.

I rebuilt the partition as part of the install process.

I'd replace that usb mouse with a PX/2 one for the installation . . SP does not play nice with usb devices untill after the installation is complete.

I'll have to track one down. Meanwhile, I might as well try the system install without a mouse ... I wonder what will happen???

But it does seem kind of odd that Dell would ship a system with hardware that makes it impossible to install the OS!

Thanks for your help so far. I'll keep you posted.

OK, for those of you who are interested; I managed to successfully install the OS.

OOPS - "tab" submits it, rather than tabbing. Sigh...

A few details:

1. I re-ran the installation, recreating the partition, without the USB mouse connected. It completed.

2. When it auto-rebooted, I could not select the "configure screen resolution" w/o the mouse, so I rebooted.

3. It was stuck in low resolution. I followed in sequence the installations of the various components; the process basically followed the descriptions in Dell's solution page(s), except:

   a. I did not need to install USB; it was onboard
   b. screen resolution was restored after installing video control drivers

Thanks for the help, the trick was unplugging the USB mouse...
