You don't buy a hard drive, but a hard drive drive USB "enclosure" to put the hard drive into from the dead PC, then connect it via usb to another PC and copy your files to that PC.

What model of Dell is it?

Is there a special size enclosure that I need? I plan to go to Fryes or Best Buy today.

You need either a 5.25inch or 3.5inch enclosure.  either will work.

Then it needs to be eitther a IDE or Sata, depending on your hard drive. Most likely IDE.

Looking at my original packing slip it has a sku#340-3615 with a desription of 40GB, ATA-100,7200 RPM hard drive. Would this mean it is a Sata drive?

Be sure to follow the enclosure manufacturer's directions for installing the hard drive in the enclosure.

Most require you set the hard drive jumper to "Master" before putting it in the enclosure, but follow the instructions that come with the enclosure.

Dell Uses "Cable Select" (CS) so be sure to move the jumper back to this before returning it to the Dell PC.

"it should recognize it as another drive"

Yes, it should be seen in Windows explorer with a drive letter.

"Then I can put my problem drive back in the problem system and let the Window CD do the repair correct"

Yes.

Most likely IDE, but it easy to tell by the data cable that connects it to the motherboard.

Sata

IDE

Thanks. This tells me it is a IDE drive. Once I get the enclosure I can put the drive in it plug the USB cable into another computer and it should recognize it as another drive and I can copy the desired files over to the other computer. Then I can put my problem drive back in the problem system and let the Window CD do the repair correct.

OK I am to the point of doing the repair. I had a fatal error. It says:

An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.

Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The Setup log files should contain more information.

Press OK to view the setup log file.

When doing that a windows pops up that says:

Error:

The D:\1386\NT5INF.CAT file could not be found. THe Error code is 3e7. Error performing inpage operation.

What should I do?

HELP :(

Either the CD is damaged or is the incorrect one, or the CD drive is defective.

Looks like it is a bad cdrom drive

Don't forget to do Windows updates several times when you get to the desktop.
