It only gives me the options of retry, information and cancel.

When SFC asks for the CD, does it give you a choice to 'browse'? If so, point it to C:\i386 .

On running system file checker there is a request for XP Professional CD2 to install files to the DLL cache. I did not receive an installation CD with this Inspiron 9300 series laptop. How can I install the needed files without the CD?

Systems that shipped beginning in early 2005 ship without Windows XP. You can contact Dell and request a CD and wait for it to ship, see Contact Us at the bottom of the page.

The reason I asked was I've never had SFC find anything wrong, ever. Does it give the file name that is bad? All the original needed files are in the C:\i386 folder, the same location that is on the CD.

It did not give a specific file name. It indicated it needed to copy some files to the DLL cache.

No, the information button tells me that I need to insert the XP Professional CD2. I did a chat with Dell support and they are sending me a XP CD as a friendly gesture.

Without a file name I can't give you the info to do a manual fix. In Win98 it used to show the name of the file. Doesn't the [information] button show anything relating to the file?

Well, no repair today but at least you're getting the CD.

More than One CD?  I've only seen this with MCE.

The OS is MCE. Does it require two CD's?

Mine did.  CD 1 was the "normal" XP Pro and CD 2 was the MCE portion.
