Windows XP Welcome screen problem - Login Loop

Question

Hi, I am on Windows XP and am having a problem where I start up the PC in safe mode or normal and it gets to the windows welcome/ login screen, it sais select user, so I select a username and it starts to log in and then the screen flashes and it comes right back, sais saving settings and then tells me to select a name again. This happens no matter how I boot up the PC. I tried putting in my dell cd and going through restore and copying userinit.exe from my c:\windows\system32 and replacing the wsaupdater.exe file but it said that the files do not exist. Does anyone know how to solve this problem or had to deal with this problem in the past? thank you, any help would be appreciated.

Yeah I tried that.. I put in my Dell Re-installation cd and did a repair installation all the way through and had the same problem as soon as everything started back up, Also Iput in the dell reinstallation disk and went into the recovery console and couldnt find anything in there.

Have you tried running  a repair on the OS?? Boot to your Windows XP CD and do the second repair... Thanks

Well we had this issue here at my work on two PCs and I had to put a new drive in and reinstall the OS and programs. I couldn't find any solution to this.... I was just faster for me to put a new drive in and reimage....
