Windows XP - after reinstall, "Windows XP Error.wav" plays at Shutdown

After re-installing Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 4700, and installing all the drivers etc., I now have a problem on shutdown.

After clicking "Turn off computer", then either "Turn off" or "Restart", I immediately hear a sound file being played (it's the standard "Windows XP Error.wav" file, which is assigned to several different situations in the Sound Scheme), then the Windows Shutdown sound is heard, then the Shutdown takes a long time but always shuts down.

Why is this "Windows XP Error.wav" file being played at shutdown?  How can I find out?  (mainly I am worried because I fear it means I've done something wrong in the reinstall of Windows XP)

You might be able to look in the event viewer for "application pop-up" and see what might be going wrong..

Start--run enter "eventvwr.msc" (no quotes) OK

I cannot guarantee, but a lot of times it will tell me something.

You can modfiy the current sound scheme and see if that error wav file comes back.

My mistake - the sound file playing is "Windows XP ding.wav", which is assigned only to the condition "Default Beep" (these 2 sounds I've mentioned are short, and not very different from each other).

Also, I had looked in the Event Viewer (Application), and found something that occurs at each Shutdown:
"Type:  Warning,  Source:  Userenv,  Event ID: 1517, User:  NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" - Event Type: Warning".  If I double click the entry, it gives the following:
"Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date:  1/31/2006
Time:  1:32:05 PM
User:  NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: DELL4700
Description:
Windows saved user DELL4700\donlanejr registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

MS Knowledge base suggest downloading and installing "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service", which should terminate all running processes for optimum Shutdown!!  (I'm in a bit over my head here).  I installed it, and I still get the sound and the Event Viewer entry.

I'm stumped.

I get the Warning "Event ID 1517" at every shutdown or re-start.  On several occasions all my restore points were deleted at the same time.  This was the reason I began checking the Event Viewer in the first place.

All information I have been able to find, points out how much the Event slows down shutdown and start.  I do not have this problem.

From the above messages it is not quite clear to me, whether the writers consider the playing of the .wav file as a cause or merely a result of the error.  If this is thought to be the cause, I would be grateful if somebody would tell me how to look up what .wav file is being played.

I fixed my problem by using MSCONFIG, Selective Startup, and systematically eliminating entries in the Startup tab.

I found that if I cleared all entries, Ding.wav no longer played at Shutdown. I added the entries back in, 1 by 1, and all was OK until I added back in the Logitech entries: LVCOMSX, ManifestEngine, LogiTray, ISStart (I have a Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 and had installed its latest software).

For the writer of the previous entry in this thread: the playing of Ding.wav at Shutdown is a symptom of a class of problems called "default beep" (found in Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds tab -> Programs -> Windows -> Default beep (highlight the entry and you'll see the sound/.wav file associated with it.
