It sounds like it might be a driver problem Have a look in these places for errors
1. Right click My Computer / Properties / Hardware / Device Manager. Look for "Yellow" errors
2. Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / Admin Tools / Event Viewer / System. Look for "Red" errors. Double click on error for information. "Event ID" number and "Source" are needed to investigate further.
This sounds more like an MBR issue (MBR= Master Boot Record), you can either run the emergency repair from the XP CD ( this usually fixes the boot record files), or run a chkdsk /r in the recovery console. The final option is to reset the configuration data in the BIOS to get a new read on your hard drive!
The only hardware to my knowledge that can cause boot problems are usb devices ( such as scanners). If you recently connected a usb device of this type, unplug it and then boot up!

The next time I booted the computer it was successful. The error log from when it failed has several entries which mean nothing to me, but I can tell there was a problem. I have copied and pasted them into a word doc. I would like to send it to someone if they would like to help me figure what is wrong. The only thing that made sense to me was "a device failed" Thanks again for any support.
