Windows XP not starting

Question

I have Wndows XP home edition service pack 2.  In booting up the computer, I am getting the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\sytem.  You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original cd-rom. Select 'r'at the first screen to start repair.    How do I repair this without having to re-install Windows.  If I have to re-install Windows, will I loose all my data on my computer(pictures, games, etc.)?  I am hoping there is some way to do this with the cd-rom that came with the computer which had windows XP already loaded up.  Thanks for any help on this...   CMB1

Try this first. If it works, you won't have to reinstall all the Microsoft updates and hotfixes again, which you will have to do after a Repair/Reinstall.
