Hello all!

My Windows explorer opens as High Priority process instead of "normal". I think this is abnormal. My Explorer is set to "Launch folder windows in a separate process".

Don't know cause of problem but mine uses Normal Priority with separate process or not.

Matt007,

High Priority:

1. Open up Windows Task Manager (WinNT/2000/XP)

2. Click on Processes tab

3. right click on "explorer.exe"

4. move mouse pointer to "Set Priority"

5. a list shows up with the current priority highlighted/bulleted

Alternatively, follow steps 1 & 2 then add the "Base Priority" column.

I find it abnormal to find explorer.exe designated as a high priority process.

You could try Windows Repair from XP CD (not the 1st R for Recovery Console , press Enter to start install then next

R for Repair )  but if you do you will have to download Windows Updates again including SP1a.

( you can buy SP1a CD from Microsoft for about US $10 , saves downloading about 30 MB update)

Leaves installed programs a data intact.

I did a fresh install of Windows XP Home SP1 without any updates. Same thing. Applied all updates. Same thing.

My Explorer.exe is set to normal. I don't have the launch folder windows in separate process ticked, don't know if that would make a difference. Have you tried unchecking it?

Have you tried setting priority to normal? If on the set priority menu you click on an option other than the one with the black dot, you get an apocalyptic warning, but the option to OK change the priority,(if you dare).

Another possibility, though I'm not sure it is related: in Control panel, System applet, advanced tab, click settings for performance, Advanced tab, processor scheduling, is that set to Programs? It could be that, since Explorer.exe is the shell, it counts as background services??

Searching Google for windows explorer opens as high priority process I found this thread in Google's cache of the MR&D Reader Forum. I wasn't able to connect to the server where the thread originally appeared.

Apparently Win2003 server also starts explorer.exe at high priority. That causes problems with hosted Terminal Server sessions. One of the posts in the thread suggested this:

we ended up using iexplore.exe (the browser executable)
which has the same functionality,
but runs in Normal priority,
now we can run about 30 users per server in stead of less than 20 !

Someone asked how that duplicated the functionality of explorer.exe. The answer:

yes we publish iexplore.exe (6.0) like this:
IEXPLORE.EXE -E X:
This opens IEXPLORE in an explorer view with folders in the
left pane with the X:\ folder opened.
(the -E switch isn't really documented I think by the way)

Just to confirm that jmw's instructions work. I added -E C: to the end of an IE shortcut target and it opens Explorer at C:. Brilliant! (although I don't need it...)

I have found that  C:\WINDOWS\explorer.scf  also open Explorer Windows which C: selected.
Don't know about priority though as mine is always normal.

Edit:
But if create Desktop shortcut the Desktop Icon is Explorer.

Yes that's what I use too; it was the shortcut target setting in W98 to open Windows Explorer at C:\ , which I just copied to XP. Target %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,c: does the same (that's the official MS way for XP).
