Windows has detected a Registry\configuration error

I got this error message one day after i got finished a thorough ScanDisk and a Disk defrag. I was prompted to delete the old scan disk files (302 mb worth, been a while). I restarted for some reason then when i got back going Windows started Recognizing new hardware. It  acted like i had installed new hardware for my monitor, sound and display drivers, etc. Then after the second restart I got this message Windows has detected a Registry\configuration error; Use ScanReg to solve this problem.  I went into safe mode and it started scan disk. Then nothing happened. No lock up , just no programs started, I did Ctrl+Alt+delete one time to see task manager and it was completely blank, No programs were there. I also got this following error message.

Heading on the error box: Enum\HTREE\Root\0

error Message: SURegCreateKey Failed!

I know your supposed to do scan reg to fix it but i can't get to where i need to start Scan Reg.  I've Lost my system disk. Is there a way to get another if i contact dell? Or is there a way to do scan reg without having my system disk.

Hextar,

Try restoring your system with a saved version of the registry. Use your emergency boot diskette to boot to a command prompt. At that prompt type scanreg /restore (there is a space before the "/"). Choose from an older saved copy of your registry and see if you are able to boot normally.

If you have lost your operating system CD you will have to purchase a new one if it is required. Dell will only replace CDs within 30 days of the computer's invoice date.

Oh man... is the emergency boot disk the system disc?  If i can find my system disk I can fix this. What if I got another dell system disk? or a ME disk?  How much is a new system disk or do i have to buy a new system.

Hextar,

The emergency boot diskette is the one you can create by going to Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs|Startup Disk tab. If you cannot make one because of problems with your system you can download one from here.

The "system disk" is the CD with your operating system on it (the ME disk). The price of a new copy of ME varies by vendor, but you can get a copy for $99 here.
