I too have the same reboot problem where it gives the "configuring updates stage 3 of 3"
then reboots ad infinitum.

Fllowing a Google search this seems to be a common problem with Vista users.

Dell, what is the answer here?

I tried re-installing this update manually, and it worked no problem. I suspect that a reboot was all that was needed.

Thanks for listening

Hi Mcewen1,

For issues like this caused by Windows Updates (and there seems to be a few updates causing this lately) if the system won't reboot properly what you can try is boot into the Windows Recovery environment (assume you are running Vista) and do a system restore to prior to the update. once back in change your update setings to let you decide which ones to install. Find the update in the list that casued the issue and either note it down somewhere and don't install it or right click the update and select Hide, this way you'll not see it anymore.

Felkis,

I appreciate your suggestions, although I really don't understand how to do what you are asking me to do.

Yes, am running Vista...

Boot into Windows Recovery envirornment and do a system restore...I take it you mean find an earlier point in time?  I'm not at all sure how to do that.

Sorry to be elementary, but can you turn this into a step by step for a non-techie?

I do not have a Vista disk...I received my XPS410 with XP (wish I'd left it on), then "upgraded" to Vista online.

Your guidance is appreciated.

When the system reboots and before you get the 1st screen continually repress F8 key. This will force the bios into diagnostic mode. You will be presented with a number of options.  One option (the last I believe) will ask to do a system restore. You will eventually be asked to choose a date to restore from (pick a date immediately before you had problem). After what seems like along time the system will reboot and hopefully will tell you the restore was succesful. Your system is now running as it was before the problem.  I dont remember the exact steps i took to do a manual restore of patch...post again if you need that
