WindowsXP SP2 Installation

Question

Hi Everyone  haven't been on lately but just wanted you to know that I finally got the courage and time to install the SP2 yesterday.  The link, which dxernnj gave me was great.  I followed it to the letter and had no trouble at all.  I did use the CD rather than the download and made sure my computer was real clean.  I am experiencing a couple of minor problems but I'm not sure if it is do to the download.  But, thought I'd let you know, it went fine.  Again, thanks to all of you that offered such reliable advise and information.  You're the best!!  I have a couple of issues pending, which I don't have time for right now so I'll be back as soon as I can to see if anyone knows how to correct them.  I already know who doesn't know how to correct them!!! Bye & stay warm.

Glad everything worked out well with your SP2 install. I was wondering if you ever updated your BIOS and which method you used (floppy version or not). I have not yet taken the plunge to upgrade to SP2. Still trying to decide if I should update the BIOS first or not. I still have the original BIOS; computer purchased 5/03. Thanks

I would recomend that you use the floppy. Many people that used the hard drive method had problems. I used the floppy when I flashed my BIOS and had no problems at all. Just be sure that you go to the Dell site and get the right BIOS update for your computer. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. The BIOS for my computer goes up to A07 but after A04, there is no floppy version available. I currently have A01. I think if I upgrade at all, A04 should be adequate as I have not changed any hardware and probably won't be adding anything.

FWIW . . I have used the Windows version of Bios update a half dozen times and it works fine . . wrs

How do you determine which BIOS version your Inspiron laptop has?

I had installed the Service Pack 2 for WIN XP Home on my own laptop last year, & everything seems to be running fine. Not seeing any major improvements or speed gains since then, however. I think the SP2 also updated MS I.E. & OE programs. I think SP2 also updates the Media Player to version 9.00.00+ if it isn't so on your system.
