Click on Start/Control Panel/Network and Internet Connections/Network Connections.
Right click on Wireless Connection, then click on Properties. Under the General Tab in Properties, make sure "Show icon in notification area when connected" and "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" are checked.
If this doesn't work, try right-clicking on Wireless Connection, and then click Disable. Then right-click again and click Enable.
The Control Panel menus I listed are for XP Media Center/Professional. If you have XP Home Edition, the menus might be a little different.
Thank you rollainm for your response. Your solution my work or may be a requirement for proper operation (don't know). I found the solution this morning.
First the wireless card must be enabled: Right-click "My Computer"/"Properties" menu item/"Hardware" tab/"Device Manager" button/"+" next to "Network adapters"/Right-click wireless card "Intel® Pro…" (in may case)/"Enable" menu item
Then: Select "Start"/"All Programs"/"Intel PROSet Wireless" folder/"Intel PROSet Wireless" application/"Tools" menu/"Application Settings…" menu item/"Advanced Settings" region – "Task Tray" item – Check "Show application icon in the taskbar"
The pie shaped icon is the Intel PROSet/Wireless icon.
It looks like you right-clicked it and selected "hide icon".
To un-hide it:
Start -> All Programs -> Intel PROSet Wireless
Tools -> Application Settings... (or type control-P)
In the Advanced Settings select "Show application icon in the taskbar" and click OK.
The other icon is the standard wireless network connection icon.
Open the Network Connections control panel, right click the Wireless LAN icon and select properties.
Select "Show icon in notification area when connected".
