Wordpad cannot save original documents in *.doc format. Its options are RTF format *.RTF and three flavors of text *.txt. See if you can rename one of those files with either
rtf or
txt extensions and then open it in Wordpad.
Wordpad can open *.doc files created in Word and save them as *.doc files.

One option is to find a friend with Word and have that friend open the *.doc files and save them as *.rtf files. Another is (if you are on a broadband connection) to download OpenOffice (a free suite which offers compatibility with Word files) from
here.

Right-click the file filename.doc and select Rename from the context menu. Enter filename.rft (or .txt).
