This service is related to the Auto Play function when you pop a CD or DVD into the drive or connect a digital camera, etc. It can be disabled and you can see how your PC runs with it that way:
Click Start | Run Type: services.msc Click Ok On the right-side of the window, scroll down to 'ShellHardwareDetection' Double-Click 'ShellHardwareDetection' Click the 'Stop' button In the 'Startup type:' field select 'Disabled' Click Apply Click Ok
Reboot
Let us know how it goes after running your PC for a day or so. You can always go back in and set it to "automatic".

I had a few more problems since then so I re-instaled XP w/sp2
