XP and File Save Permission Error MS Office 2000

I had been happily running Windows XP (Upgrade Edition plus Svc Pak 2) and MS Office 2000 on my Dell Dimension until I upgraded to Norton System Works 2008 two weeks ago.  Now periodically when I'm working in MS Word and do a File Save, I get a "Permission" error.  Sometimes the error will say the disk "has been removed" (I'm saving to my hard disk.)  Word then "must close".  My original file will have completely disappeared from the directory.  There will be a couple of Word's TMP##### files in the directory, but when I reload Word and try to access one of the TMP#### files I get an error "unable to open file" saying the "path is invalid".  I've searched the Dell and Norton Knowledge Bases on all combinations I can think of but haven't found this particular problem.

The first time this happened was while Norton Live Update was running in the background on my dial-up connection (which took 3 hours!), but it has also happened while working offline.  Any suggestions for a solution?

Ref the above message -- I just had the whole miserable sequence happen again so I copied down the exact error messages (four in all):

[Exclamation Point]

Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error.

(C:/Documents and Settings/.../filename.ext)

[OK]

There is an unrecoverable disk error on file ~WRL1496.tmp.  The disk you're working on has a media problem that prevents Word from using it.  Try the following:

* Try formatting another disk.

* Save the document to another disk.

[OK]

Word failed reading from this file (~WRL1496.tmp).  Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry.

[Retry] [Cancel]

Word has lost data due to a bad network connection or missing floppy.  Documents relying on this data are going to be saved and then closed.

[OK]

Word then closes and the document is completely lost.  Note that there is NO network connection and NO floppy disk actually involved, and that the first save has been completed successfully.  The problem seems to occur on subsequent saves.

Run a full diagnostic on the hard disk (F12 from the dell logo screen before windows boots up).  It looks as if your hard disk is failing.

Didn't act like a failing hard disk -- I was able to save the first generation of a document every time without an error.  It was the periodic saves (creating new generations of the Word tmp files) that caused the abort.  Norton Tech Support suggested going into Norton Antivirus Options under Real Time Protection and turning off the option to "Scan Microsoft Office documents."  However, I had already tried that with no success.

Today while troubleshooting, I went into the option "Real Time Protection" -- "Turn on Suspicious Activity Monitoring" -- "Turn On Advanced Mode" (which apparently is turned off by default on installation).  I can't determine from the Help Files exactly what this option is supposed to DO (it says only will "report suspicious activity").  So far today (Saturday, April 5, 2008) I have been able to use Word with no problems, and the "Scan Microsoft Office" feature is still turned on.

BTW, I had a problem with accessing the USB port after changing the "Advanced Mode" option check mark. A simple Restart didn't clear it, but a shut down and power off did.  [Must be that Bermuda Triangle Macro!]
