From your task manager its definitely not the computer running out of memory its only at 12%. Since Vista, HP has tended to have extremely buggy software when it comes to scanning and printing. My old HP all in one printer has been left in the cupboard for a couple of years unused. I think its the main reason they have lost a lot of users to the likes of Epson and Canon. My personal favourite is Epson, my Epson V33 flatbed scanner performs extremely well.

Moreover HP split into 2 recently; a sign showing that it/they are struggling:

Its a HP scanner so you should check on the HP forums.

Its possible that the scanning program is 32 Bit and maxing out at 4 GB of RAM.

Nope.  The info for the download says 8.1 64 bit.

That doesn't mean the application is 64 Bit; 32 Bit applications can be installed on a 64 Bit OS and will max out at 4 GB RAM. Please open up the task manager and let us know how much memory is being used.

Press [Ctrl], [Shift] and [Esc] to launch the task manager. Select more details:

Select memory to list the processes by the ones utilising the most memory:

Let us know whats eating up the most memory and the % memory usage. Then perform a scan.

Also is this a large multi-page document? Does the same error occur with just one page?

Two pages (One page, two sided)  Green paper with kindergarten graduation schedule printed on both sides.  Scanned Black and White and Color.

Just did single page in color, same settings and it saved fine.  Thanks for continuing to help.  This problem was posted by someone else on the HP forum in early 2014 and still not resolved.

HP (who should be fixing it) says to contact Dell.  I solved the problem.  I sent it to the landfill and bought another canon.

Thanks to all who tried to help.  Some things just be.

Thanks for your assistance.  I bought a cheap device to provide multiple page scanning and got what I paid for.
