did you add memory? It may be faulty.  Try reseating the memory.

This error happens well before the operating system gets loaded, so its not related to Windows SP2.

to check the bios on boot when you see the dell logo before windows comes up press F2. Or when you get the error message saying the memory has changed press F2 to enter setup. Usually you can look at all the different pages by pressing alt-P look to see if anything says OS install mode.

I know that you already tried reseating the memory and swapping it, but I wanted to add that sometimes it takes several tries. I had to reseat/swap my two memory pieces three times for it to finally boot up correctly and now the comp is working perfectly again. The first two times it allowed me to boot up the system but with a messed up screen. So even if it looks like they are in correctly, it may be that it just needs an extra jiggle....or luck...or something.

maybe i didnt reset the memory right, how do i do that? I contacted dell they sent me a box to put my laptop in, they think its a motherboard problem. So i have the extended warranty maybe i should just send it in to get tested and fixed. if i dont have to though that be nice, i need this computer, ive put off sending it out for two weeks now. i just dont reboot and i need to soon its getting pretty laggy, haha
