I am also having trouble with this. After installing SP2 I cannot boot my comp. All I get is a black screen. No bios screen or safe mode option. Any ideas?
If your installation of SP2 comes INCLUDED on the XP Home/Pro CD, forget about removing it. Not possable.
How to remove the SP2 from your system via the XP Installation CD - REPAIR INSTALL
If you have a Dell XP Home/Pro Install disk (not including sp2), insert into the CD/ROM drive and reboot the pc. Press any key when prompted. If not prompted, reboot and tap the F12 key>>then choose boot from CD.
Once the CD loads, choose ENTER on the first setup screen to continue installing XP.
Second screen - F8 to agree to the licence.
**Thrid screen - You should press "R" to run a repair on a current installation.
(**Only choose R if given the choice to repair - if the repair option is not accessable the 4th screen may appear instead - the partitions list! - if it does, choose escape or exit)
How to remove the SP2 from your system via the XP Installation CD- RECOVERY CONSOLE
If you have a Dell XP Home/Pro Install disk (not including sp2), insert into the CD/ROM drive and reboot the pc. Press any key when prompted. If not prompted, reboot and tap the F12 key>>then choose boot from CD.
Once the CD loads, choose "R" to run a repair using the Recovery Console.
When asked which installation you wish to log onto, press the number "1" and press enter.
You will then be asked for your administrative password - if you do not have one, simply press enter.
The cursor will then settle at a command prompt: Then type the following.
cd(then one space)$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst- (Press Enter)
Most of the Command should be then rewriten on the next line in block capitols and the cursor should settle again - then type:
batch(then one space)spuninst.txt -
(Press Enter)
This should remove the SP2 from your PC.
P.S. Some of the removal messages may say that the process has failed, but this is normal.

Thanks! But I don't have any Dell CD's. I installed from a standard Windows XP Pro installation disk.
Eventually I decided to re-install Windows XP Pro completely (with no service packs). This works fine. So I will leave it without SP2 for the moment.
It's a shame, as I have a Dell Latitude D600 that I just upgrade to XP SP2 no problems. It seems older Dells (this GX110 is from 2000) may not work with XP SP2.

I just worked this one out myself for a dell latitude v700, just installed winxp with sp2 first reboot black screen,
In the bios where the monitor type is, CRT lcd simulation, choose simulation and it works
Simple as that for me, yet it would run if i went into f8 mode and choose enable vga mode.
