application fails after upgrading from SP1 to SP2

I have an old application that has worked fine for years under XP and SP1. After upgrading to SP2 it fails with a message:
"The application failed to initialize properly (oxc0000005)". System has been Spyware sweeped and Virus scanned and comes
up clean. Have attempted re-installing application - no change. It is not possible to obtain a newer version of the software as it
went out of support in 2004. Have also attempted disabling DEP - also no change. Have tried numerous compatibility fix combinations - also no change. This oxc0000005 seems to be an access violation, but if DEP is disabled, why is this happening ??

Without knowing the actual application we can't say for sure.  However, there were some updates in SP2 that did cause some programs not to work or work properly until the vendor's upgraded them to work with SP2.  This program may be one of those.

As always, try the compatibility factor to roll back the software package.

Windows has a "compatibility mode" that will allow you to run, for example in Win98 compatibility mode.  If you have an icon on your desktop for the program, RIGHT click on it and then Left click Properties.  One of the options will be the compatibility mode.

However, to be truthful, If something would not run in native Windows XP mode, I never got one to run in a compatibility mode.

How do I apply/use compatibility factor or are you referring to a variety of compatibilty fixes?
I have tried most of the compatibility fixes that seem relevant (disablenx etc)

I am going to create another bootable partition, with "native" Windows XP in it, and run my application from there when I need it.
A bit tedious, but what can you do! Thanks for help.
