a repair install does not touch your data, but if you have data that you cannot afford to lose, then mount the hard drive in another PC as a secondary drive, and copy the data off, before doing the repair install.

Have you tried the Recovery Console to repair the MBR? Boot to the xp cd, select the Recovery Console and type Chkdsk  /R at the prompt. If that completes successfully--takes a really long time--hours-- on big hard drives, type Fixboot to repair the MBR and reboot.

thanks for the 2 links - GoBack is what started this all, so that doesn't apply.  I'm taking a look at the 2nd link.

Ran chkdsk successfully, then fixboot.  Same problem.  Other suggestions?
