can't boot, windows/system32/congig/system missing or corrupt

Dimension4600 Xp Pro

Hi,

a friend brought me his pc that won't boot anymore. It stop pretty quickly with the above message.

I have googled it to find MS kb/307545 warning about not trying the procedure if OEM...

What are the alternatives, if any, to a complete reformat?

Tks in advance

I now get early in boot process the dreaded:

A disk read error occurred

Press ctrl-Alt-Del

(which only bring you back to same black screen error)

Interestingly enough, I was not only able to go into Dell utility diagnostic, all relevant tests passed (can't boot OS & Windows blue screen)

Recovery console never asked me once for a p/w, but now gives me mostly ''access denied''.

Chkdsk /p & chkdsk /r both say: THE VOLUME APPEARS TO CONTAIN ONE OR MORE UNRECOVERABLE PROBLEMS

I have tried to put the problem hdd as a slave in another comp, getting: The file or directory is corrupt and non-readable

I have done a Knoppix cd, in the Konsole, tried this: ntfsfix /dev/sda2

Mounting volume...$MFT has invalid magic
ntfs_mft__load(): Failed
Failed to load $MFT: Input/output error
Failed to start volume: Input/output error
FAILED
Failed to startup volume: Input/output error
Volume is corrupt. You should run chkdsk

Any hope left if not to repair, at least to recover the data
