Hi,
Did you have the scanner funcioning at all, or is this your first attempt to use it?
If you had previously installed it then you might have to completely remove it before installing the new drivers [but this is probably not the cause]
Next might be anti-virus software, try disabling the anti-virus and then installing the scanner.
If the downloaded driver is a self-extracting .exe, which means it can be unzipped using any compression software like Winzip
and then, once u have extracted all the files to some folder like C:\MyCannonDrivers go to that folder and run Setup.exe from there. [but this may not be the issue either because that is exactly what the self-extractor does, just extracts to some temp folder].
If you are using an USB scanner u might have to make sure that the USB compatibility is okay,i.e. if the scanner is a USB 2.0 and your motherboard is running 1.1 then you got a problem.
But I doubt any of the above will help you resolve the issue, but its a start, and here is what I need to know.
What canon scanner are you using?, pls dont leave important information like this out
Also I found this on
microsoft forums Take a peek at it, it might help.
Thanks for reply! I have done uninstall everything and installed fresh. I will try again with antivirus disabled when I get home from work, but I am pretty sure I had antivirus closed a few times when I was trying before, is that sufficient?
Yea, I also went to where it was downloaded and ran it from there. It seems to have downloaded properly and will open for me and begin installing just fine, just that dang message that "class installer has denied the upgrade" comes right at the very last finish button.
I had the scanner, (Canon FB620U) hooked up before to my old puter, that had windows 98 on it. Worked great
I am not sure how to check for USB compatability, but will try to find that out as well later today to see if that is it.
I thank you for your help. And the lead to the other messages.
Hi,
Here is the support document relating to the issue at hand directly form Canon
Canon Site Troubleshooting
That hopefully should do the job.
And instead of running the searck you might be better off navigating to the mentioned key
and also navigate to the followig keys as well to make sure
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and here the right pane can actually be empty with just the (Default) entry without a value and if you have installed speeck recognition then ctfmon.exe might also be here which is okay
the following keys should be empty except for the (Default) entry with no value.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
and clear your startup menu with the exception of your antivirus auto protect from startu--allprograms--startup
I followed the link and did what you suggested. No virus, cleared start menu and tried reinstalling, and it still gives me the same class installer denied message. Can you tell me how to check the USB compatability? Please forgive the apparent ignorance, I am trying, and am very exhausted at this point, but need my scanner to talk to my puter...Thx.
Hi,
I know its not a USB issue, since the canon scanner u r using is old and it has the older USB version which should not be affecting the issue at all.
Other than this just follow the post on the microsoft website and see if that might help.
and finally you can talk to canon, but I doubt it will have a positive outcome.
Well, thanks Rohini so much for your time anyways. I did the things on the microsoft post, still same thing. Yea, I have talked to Canon, they insist it is a XP problem and I have to talk to an Microsoft techie, Microsoft wants 35 bucks to ask them a question, (since it was preloaded on my puter), and they say I should talk to Dell. The Dell phone techie says I have to talk to Canon. Sorta frustrated here. I sure hate to have to go buy a whole new scanner when this one was working beautifuly the day before I got this new puter. But thanks again for trying!
Hi lilli,
I am not sure if you followed the microsoft post to properly remove the current scanner including deleting the proper inf and pnf files?
and then trying to reinstall the software?
and I am sorry to hear that dell and canon just pass the buck around, which is what I thought, in the end I dont know if you want to go to microsoft support, but if you do they will solve the problem, I can vouch for that, because once I ran into a horrible problem with Visual Studio and my reponse time to solution was literally 15 mins and it was done when I had spent 2 days trying to fix it.
Also I have never ran into this trouble and have no clue how to replicate it either, so from my end the support is limited.
The link that you supplied, was more about checking for a specific virus that causes this problem. I have been so many places and followed instructions to uninstall several times, however I am not sure about the specific files you just mentioned...? I just might just have to break down and call Micorsoft, altho it will chaff my hide, lol. Still cheaper than a new printer....Thx
Hi,
Uninstall Info:[I would suggest that you print this out]
1.) Do your Add/Remove Programs from the control Panel to remove your canon software
[Reboot]
2.) go to C:\Program files\Canon [or other similar canon folder] and delete the whole canon folder.
If you get an access denied or cannot delete message then [but I doubt it]
CTRL+ALT+DEL--Task Manager--Processes, if any processes are related to canon then end them.
then you should be able to delete it.
3.)Create a system restore point now
start--All programs--Accessories--System Tools--System Restore
Choose to create a restore point and give it a name.
The reason is now we will go and edit the registry.
4.)start--run--regedit
NOTE:Improper use of registry will render the system useless. Navigate to the following key [If this key is not present then it was already removed and go to next step]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Canon
You can delete this whole Canon Key by pressing [Del] or right click and choose delete and then confirm.
Collapse this hive.
-------------------------------------- Navigate to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In the
right pane there are some entries, you can delete any that refer to canon
Repeat the same under the following hive
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
-------------------------------------- Navigate to the following key [Take this slowly this is a huge hive]
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0f3aede0-3f66-11d2-b1a1-00c04fcb5466}
You can make sure this is related to canon by clicking on it and looking in the right pane.
Delete this key.
-------------------------------------- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{821dc340-410b-11d2-b1a1-00c04fcb5466}
You can make sure this is related to canon by clicking on it and looking in the right pane.
This is the "Canon Push Button"
CLOSE THE REGISTRY
5.)Now we can go and find any unregistered DLLs
start--run--cmd [Enter], if cmd does not work then try command.
This should bring up a command prompt
Type the following commands, the [Enter] means press the enter key on the keyboard.
The slashes used (i.e. the / and \) cannot be interchanged so be sure to type the right slashes, I am assuming your harddrive is C: if it is different then change the drive letter.
C: \ [Enter]
Now you should be at a C: prompt
We start unregistering Dlls,
NOTE: for several of these you might get a failed message because it is already unregistered, otherwise it will give you an unregistered message. For each successfully unregistered dll run a file search in C:\Windows and then delete the file. regsvr32 /u FB62UUSD.DLL [Enter]
regsvr32 /u FB62UCPL.DLL [Enter]
regsvr32 /u UCS32P.DLL [Enter]
regsvr32 /u FB62UUI.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u CIPL.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u CSUI.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u IMGENH.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u IOP.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u ITLIB32.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u SCANINTF.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u FB62UDRV.dll [Enter]
regsvr32 /u TPM.dll [Enter]
Exit [Enter] this should close the command prompt.
6.)Open C:\Windows\inf
First go to the toolbar and Choose Tools--Folder Options
Go to the View [Tab]
Under "Hidden Files and Folders" choose "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" [YES]
Click "Apply to all folders"
Click Apply [Bottom Right]
Click OK
In this folder we are at you will see a bunch of inf files
and some of them are oem#.inf [where # is a number like 1, 2, 3, 4...]
Open each to check and see if any of them says canon.
if so then delete the inf file and the associated PNF file [you cannot open the PNF file], i.e. if there is an oem1.inf there will be an oem.pnf file as well, this
7.)C:\Windows\Installer
There should be folders with a bunch of numbers
Go through each and and see if any refers to canon, if there is any refering to canon delete that folder
8.) Give the bad boy a reboot
9.)try and install your canon software again.
I am assuming that you have downloaded this file SG-CSU522.exe from canons site.
If this does not work then poof, I am stumped and it might be worth while paying microsoft.
Thanks Rohini, no I never had it working on this new puter with XP. it was working great on windows 98 (on old puter). I went to Canon site for the drivers to use with XP and sure seemed like all was going well, (that is one of the places I got the uninstall instructions that I tried).
Thank you for making up that uninstall doc for me, (BTW, God Bless you), I hope I can understand and follow instructions. I am not familiar with some of the techie lingo. Have a nice night!

HOLEY MOLEY that was a lot of work, lol! Unfortunately it didn't work. But man I sure thank you for getting that all put together for me!!!!!!!!!!!! I was very impressed with how easy you layed it out for me, and proud of myself I followed it right along! I am going to just call them tomorrow and be done with it. How did you know all those file numbers ect... Mind boggling!
Only one thing will make me mad, and that is if I pay them to help me, and THEN it STILL doesn't get INSTALLED. But, thinking posative for now. Again, thanks for holding my hand thru this mess. Even if I didn't fix it, I learned some cool stuff. It was quite interesting finding all the little places that files can hide!
Hi,
Well I am sorry it didnt work out, it must be something to do with XP then, and I have never seen that error before.
About getting those numbers, I just looked at the inf installer file, which pretty much lays out the sytem files it will copy and the registry entries it will make.
Hey,
I think I might have found the problem,it seems like your XP is simply blocking any unsigned drivers.
Lets try this
You can change these settings of driver signing
Start--run--sysdm.cpl [Enter]
Hardware [Tab]
Driver Signing
Under File Signature verification, you can choose to "Ignore"
Then uninstall the canon software and then reinstall it.
That should do it.
I feel dumb for going thru all the other stuff.
