clean install win2k over XP

A few months back I tried a clean install of win2k on a new Dimension desktop that had XP home ed but was unable to delete some kind of "locked" partition on the c drive. After the win2k installation, the PC would always ask which OS (XP home or win2k) should be used. This made me very angry and against my better judgement, I recently ordered a new Dimension 4600 for my fiance. It has XP pro but regardless of the OS I want to do a clean install of something (XP pro or win2k) to delete all of the extra and uneeded software that comes on a new PC. What can I do to install things my own way!?

lucasd2002,

Quite a few companies that I know run hidden partitions in the systems.  Typically there for system restore functions, but also for other reasons.

Granted that you have the additional license to install Windows 2000 on the 4600 system, the best way would probably be to get a Linux boot disc.  Some really simple forms of Linux can recognize over 100 different types of partition types.  Including the stange OS/2 Warp, HDFS, QNIX, and NTFS styles.  Once you remove the partitions from the system.  Reboot with the Win 2K disc in the CD-Rom drive.

The great thing about this is that Linux is a free download from most of the sites, you just need to have the patience to download a copy and figure out the partitioning tool that comes standard with linux.

Hope this helps.

^_^ Cheers!

"some kind of "locked" partition on the c drive"

Not sure what this is since C is a partition. Is it the utility partition your speaking of? You should have been able to delete all the partitions during the setup for 2000.

"the PC would always ask which OS (XP home or win2k) should be used"

Easy way to get rid of this is to edit the boot.ini file and remove ONLY the unwanted or duplicate line that looks like this.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
