I agree. Check your Device Manager. Good to run chkdsk before running defrag.

I have service pack 1 the only hardware I have installed is a printer. I have had Dell to replace the hard drive and modem though. I am currently also having problems with my printer. When something prints the process doesnt end after the printer stops and it is difficult to cancel, restart, or delete a printing process. Would this have an effect?

As far as software, there's been a few but nothing harmful Spyhunter, Dreamweaver MX, a Ram Defragmenter and that belarc advisor

try in start>all programs> and look for the printer software there and a uninstall.

The printer is a Lexmark X1150,  All In One Center connected to a USB port.The printer software isnt under the add/remove programs list. Where can I find it?

Followed your Advice. Gere's what I found out:

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller disabled - I don't figure this to be a problem since I do not have a local network.

No Drivers for:

Direct Memory Access Controller

Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM SMBus Controller 24C3

Numeric Data Processor

Programmable Interrupt Controller

(2) System Boards

System Timer

System Speaker

I don't know if these create problems or how to fix them so any suggestions appreciated.

Not a trouble, click start, then run and type WINVER and click OK this will tell you if Service pack 1 is installed. Also too, this error message is  specific to incompatible hardware and or  software, what new devices or software have you installed on your system in the last 2 months since this started to happen?

Where would I find that? Sorry fort the simple question but I have never looked for it and don't remember if I installed it.

Ok I have unplugged and uninstalled my printer & software. Now what?

reboot the system and see if this still happens. If this still happens, you may want to do 1 of 2 things. If this has been happening for over 2 months, back up your data and format and clean install XP. If this still happens after a formatted clean install and no third party software, you have a hardware issue.

Cointact Dell and explain that this is still happening and you want this fixed and it is very irritating you cannot enjoy the performance of your computer without issues boggin you down

This error deos seem to represent a hardware or software issue. For testing  this out. Unplug the printer and uninstall the printer software reboot see what happens

Im not sure what steps you want.

Rebooting the system?

backing up the data and formatting or calling Dell?

Do you have Service pack 1 installed on your system?

If after you format, third party software in this case , would be depending if you are using the Dell Disk or an actual retail copy of XP. Anything from a retail copy of Xp install that isnt Microsoft  would be third party.
