deleted needed files while using norton clean sweep

Hey.......

Could use some advice. Was using norton clean sweep and went into "advanced" and "unused file type" to get rid of uneeded files. Since then I went into XP home edition, clicked on start-all programs-accessories and then system tools. System tools shows (empty) when there used to be items like disk defrag, system restore, disk cleanup and so on in there. Other items are also missing from the start menu like windows update. I have also noticed that some graphics are not pulling up in various programs, and some note-pads I had on the desk top are now missing.

I must have deleted these things without realizing it. What would be the best way to restore things. I have already tried system restore, and still have the above problems. Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Try VCraig's advice first. If you have no success, then here are some file recovery /undelete programs. Maybe you'll get lucky:

Absolutely no guarantee here but you could try to replace the deleted files by clicking Start, then Run, and in the command line/box type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes - and note the space between sfc and /scannow) and click OK or press the Enter key. You may be prompted to insert your Windows CD. That said, you may have to do a repair reinstall, although most long-time contributors here would probably recommend a clean install.

And for the record--Clean Sweep should never be used with Windows XP. Norton has dropped that troublesome app. from its suites. Don't use any old utilities with XP.

I haven't used Clean Sweep in a few years but I think mine used to put files I deleted into a special area that would eventually purge after so many days. You might look around in the Clean Sweep program to see if there's a restore option, or whatever Norton calls it, for deleted files.

thanks..............have tried that, and when I get to the area where it asks me to put windows XP in I can't. I use the Dell product number that came with the CD, and it says incorrect  number entered.

Thanks. Tried all three with no luck. Did find the files, but they won't open or allow me to save them somewhere.

I have never had to use any of these recovery programs, but others have done it with good results. In Restoration 2514, after selecting a wildcard (ie ".exe"), what happens when you click on 'restore by copying' ?
