dell WinMe reinstall disk same as startup disk?
I am having an error message after Dell logo screen:
Disk I/O error
Replace the disk, and then press any key
I cannot open windows in safe mode or network boot.
Can I use the disk that came with the Dimension 8100 that reads:
"Reinstallation CD WMe" to start windows without risk of losing files?
Thanks,
Val

No, you can't. It sounds like your hard disk has failed (unless you have a floppy disk in the A:\ drive and that's what's prompting the error). Try running Dell diagnostics on it to see if this is the case.

No floppy in drive, in fact I've never used the floppy drive.
I ran a diagnostic earlier today and it passed. The tech guy at Dell said it must be an OS problem. I can't find my startup disk and microsoft can't send me one. I need my computer back!
Thanks in advance for any help,

You can download a startup disk from here. The comments in this thread may be elightening if not helpful. You might try restoring a good stored registry using the procedure here although given the error message you received I doubt that it will correct anything. Using the startup disk you can also try to install ME over itself, but I suspect that the problem is with the hard disk, despite the tech's diagnosis of software problems.
