dialing and connection sounds in modem
I have always heard the sounds of dialing and connections from the modem. My friend was trying to speed up my computer and removed some running programs from msconfig. After that no sound of dialing or connections. All sound controls are set to loud, none on mute. Where can I make the selection to restore the sound of dialing and connections. I am running Windows XP on Dell Inspiron 2650.

Go to Start|Control Panel|Phone and Modem. Click on the Modem tab, click to select your modem then click Properties. On the dialog that opens click the Modem tab again and use the slider to set the Speaker Volume for the modem.

Chose "General" tab. Clicked on something like "modem setting" button for the model I had.
Then the modem configuation box came up. There was the the checkboxes, and one was "Enable Modem Speaker". Make sure that's checked.
Hope one of us helped.

Personally, I found the modem sounds too be irritating, after awhile, especially coming out of a laptop's speaker(s). I assume you can still connect to the internet?? If not, you have another problem.
How long ago did your "friend" do this?? You might be able to undo what he./she did by using system restore.
Here are the instructions:

Are you getting any normal PC sounds or is there a possibility that PC Speaker may be muted?
