If you haven't already, you need to check the advice Rick (PudgyOne) has offered you in the other thread you've got going on this same subject :emotion-55:
If you would have used the W7 upgrade advisor in XP, it would have warned you of most all the potential issues of upgrading from XP to W7 on your system. Do your homework next time.
I did my home work. I did run upgrade advisor. I did not mention anything about my printer not being compatable nor did it mention anything about my programs not being able to run on Windows 7. If you ask me the upgrade advisor was a waste of time. I am discusted with that program also. Microsoft dropped the ball when it made the transition from xp to Windows 7 so difficult. Had I known the things that I do now...I would never have made the transition.
I'm disgusted as well! I pay double what the base model is for this netbook. They install it with Windows 7 STARTER???!!!!???? This was supposed to be put out in 3rd world countries for starting regions! Why in the h#ll is this on my netbook? You can't even change the background or colors! What are they thinking??!?!?!?

Was the printer turned on when you ran the advisor.
I have several old XP programs installed in W7 with no issues.
Compatibility Mode
Here is some good advice when installing programs in Vista-W7, This is good advice even if the program was designed for Vista-W7.
Here is how to install software or drivers on Vista or W7 that are for XP,2000
1. Download your program to a folder of choice, Right click on the setup.exe file for the software/driver you are trying to install and select properties, if there is an "Unblock" button on the General Tab, click it, then go to the compatibility Tab
2. Tick the "run this file in compatibility mode" box and then select XP in the drop down box, or whatever OS the software was designed for, Tick "run this program as Administrator" if it is available, hit OK. If it was designed for Vista/W7 then skip compatibility and only use run as administrator.
3. Now double click this setup.exe file to execute the install process, hopefully all will go well and install the drivers/Software you need.
4. If the exe installs software for the device, or you have installed software only, you need to navigate to the program folder where it installed, then do the compatibility thing (1 & 2) again for the program executable(s). If the program was designed for Vista-W7 skip compatibility mode, just tick "run as administrator"
I do not guarantee all drivers or software to work in Vista/W7, but a large percentage do..
Good luck.
There is no compatibility mode for .msi installers
The very first search result on Google gave me this LINK stating that the printer is 100% not compatable with Windows 7. But after that there are lots of other links that show how to get it to work in Windows 7. So I would think that with a little effort you should be able to get the printer to work.
As for Macrium Reflect did you create the rescue/boot disk? There is no reason to go out and purchase anything if you used the software correctly.
I had gone to Vista and had so many software applications that would not run. When I went to Windows 7 I tried them again and they all work perfect. Most of them even run better than under XP.
swengryn has a 944 Printer and he's having trouble with it on the network. I do NOt actually know how to network the printer. I use a wirteless print server and have helped many people but I will tell you I have NEVER networked a printer.
Maybe one of you kind members could help him get the Dell 944 Printer networked. I know the Dell 944 Printer will work with Windows 7 as another member has reported back that they got the printer to work.
Maybe if he would tell you what the 944 Printer is connected to, make and model of the computer and operating system, and then tell you what make and model of computer and operating system he's trying to get to connect to the host computer, he may be able to get thing working. mombodog, I gave hin the link to your suggested thread but it didn't help. File and Print Sharing in Vista (Thanks to mombodog)
I have faith in everyone here that they can get this working for swengryn! :emotion-21:
Thanks for your help. I'm going to try to install the compatability mode with the xp drivers. I was using vista sp2 drivers before. That might solve the problem. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.
I appriciate all your help. I'm going to sit down here soon and try a couple of things you suggest. The I forgot to make a rescue disk when I downloaded Macrium Reflect so looks like I will have to buy the program if I decide to go back to xp. If I can get this printer working, I will stick with W7. I will keep you posted and thanks again!
Thanks for your help. As soon as I can set aside a half a day to sit down in front of my computer I'm sure with everyone's help I will solve this thing. I will keep you posted. I can tell your well respected in this forum. I got a lot of good advise so far. I plan to address this issue soon. Thank you and thanks to everyone who has responded!
Success! I uninstalled the 944 driver completely using the printer uninstall program. I downloaded the xp drivers and installed the dirver in compatablity mode. That was sucessful and I was then able to print from my desktop. I then went into my network laptop and added the printer in the network contol panel and then was able to print from my laptop thru the network. Thanks for all your help and everyone who sent me suggestions thru this forum.
