duplicate name?

When I turn my laptop on I am getting an error message that says.."Duplicate name on the network". What is this? I am not on a network. It has also corrupted a file in McAffe and telling me I need to re-install.

MJF33904,
What version of Windows XP are you using?  Does the laptop have wireless connectivity built in?  Do you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP installed?

Per Microsoft "The NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NBT) protocols are, by design, unauthenticated and therefore vulnerable to "spoofing." A malicious user could misuse the unauthenticated nature of the protocol to send a name-conflict datagram to a target computer to cause it to relinquish its name and stop responding to queries.

Upon receiving an unsolicited name-conflict datagram, the computer stops responding to the NetBIOS name that is in conflict, and it may display an error message stating that a duplicate name exists on the network..."

Since McAfee is corrupt or being corrupted, your system may be infected with a "spoofing" bug.    Then again, it may be that McAfee itself is the culprit.  You may be getting a false-positive message.

Click on Start|Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer.  Look for events marked with a Yellow triangle with exclamation mark and Red circle with white X.  Right click on these events.  Left click on Properties.  May give a clue regarding your error message.
