error message when trying to install win 7 on vostro v131

Hi,

I  purchased and installed a SSD in my Dell Vostro v131 and when I tried to install windows 7 using a USB key, i get the message below and cannot continue the installation.

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing.  If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.  Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step

I created the bootable usb by following these instructions:

1. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, open an elevated command prompt and run the following commands one by one:

a)   Diskpart

b)   list disk

You can identify your USB drive by its size. For example, it is disk 1.

c)   select disk 1

      Select your USB drive.

d)   clean

     Clear it.

e)   create partition primary

f)   select partition 1

g)   active

Mark this partition as an active boot partition. This will enable this USB drive bootable.

h)   format fs=ntfs quick

2. After formatting the USB drive, copy all the files in the DVD to the USB drive

I copied the contents from the OS DVD that came with the v131 when I purchased it.

Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

i've installed Win 7 on my desktop following the same procedure and i have never seen this message before..

Can anyone shed some light on this problem??

Thanks in advance!

I saw a post somewhere else that this issue is due to usage of USB 3.0 port when installing OS with a flash drive.

I plugged in the USB key into the USB 2.0 por and that resolved the issue.

Hope this helps your problem!

This is 99% of the time bad media.  Trying the install with a flash drive is the first step to workaround it, but if the corrupted files are simply copied to the flash drive (not simply an optical media issue), then you'll see the same error using this method.

To test, I would suggest downloading fresh media from Microsoft's online partner, Digital River, and installing using that media.  If that works, then you know your installation DVD files were corrupt.

You can then activate Windows by entering your Product Key, then activating over the phone (2-3 minutes, automated call).

If that doesn't work, then there is the possibility that Windows 7 actually needs a driver for the onboard SATA controller (which would manage both the hard drive and optical drive):

I have a Vostro 131 that was taken down with by Malware and/or viruses.  I'm trying to reformat and reinstall Win-7 Pro-64bit.

I'm getting the same error message- "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing.  If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now."

I've tried using a 3 different Win-7 Pro 64bit OS disks that were shipped with my other V131 systems but I'm having the same results.

I receive the same error when trying to load the OS from a flash drive I created from the digitial river download.

I've downloaded all available Dell drivers to a flash drive, CD and a DVD but I'm stumped as to what drivers the install is looking for.

Any updates and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The USB 2.0 vs. 3.0 solution is -indeed- the correct one!

BTW, hοw do you guys come up with these "out of nowhere" answers? Mecca319 is reporting an error that clearly references a missing driver, (aka the F6 at boot time of Windows 2K3 and earlier) therefore the Win7 installation routine cannot access the hard drive. This has nothing to do with corrupt installation media, at least not yet, at this point.

Please God have mercy!

What we need in the computer world is less confusion and more sound advice.

Apparently, we still have a long way to go...

Really only worked when I changed the USB 3.0 port (right) by the USB 2.0 (left) still had to test various OS Win images to make sure the installation as it accused error in the process.
