I think I solved it by replacing my original copy of explorer.exe with a new one from my other computer.

Don't think it was another Application causing the problem since they co- existed for years something must have happened tho the original.

I simply saved a good copy into my C:\ WINNT folder and when it said do you want to replace the copy in there ?Yes .It went in.

No more errors.

OOPS I did it again.

Now I think since it all ways comes up code 1002 Winlogon App .(Eventvwr.msc.)  I may have a problem since I repaired it with the W2K cd and renamed the machine without total reformat.

Any ideas welcome.

How bout' that?

Don

I've today experienced exactly the same problem as Don:

When I'm about to display the  Control Panel   (Start - Settings - Control Panel),
i get an error window saying

"Program Error", and the text
'Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program. An error log has been generated'.

The explorer.exe (desktop) is then being restarted automatically.

The Dr. Watson log file drwtsn32.log  records this event
and the entry starts with:
"Application exception occurred:
        App: explorer.exe (pid=nnnn)
        When: (date / time)
        Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)"

In the "Event Viewer / Application Log" the event is listed as:
Event 1002: 'The shell stopped unexpectedly and C:\WINNT\Explorer.Exe was restarted.'

I'v run alle Windows Updates available on my computer,
and I use MacAfee anti-virus program with the most
recent Virus list.

I've had no problems with my computer until today.
(I'v owned the thing for over 3 years now).

Does anybody have a solution to this problem ?

regards,

On the kind hint from Gunnar Arneberg (Norway) the problem now has been solved.

The 'sinner' seems to be the recent NVIDIA Screen Driver update
(that was distributed as part of Windows Update for Windows 2000 Pro)
which installs a corrupt file "nvtuicpl.cpl", the contents of which is causing the
Control Panel to abort. This .cpl file is presumably used to handle multiple
monitors. If you do not have such a configuration, you can safely (re)move this file
from the folder where it resides (C:/winnt/system32). After removal the Control Panel
opens normally.

It's rather remarkable that a file causing fatal application errors is being distributed
as an official Windows Update. One would assume that MS immediately will issue
a new driver update where the error is corrected, and at the same time make a
public apology to the thousands of users who have spent a large number of unpaid
hours to come to grips with this problem.

Or, is this too much to expect from Microsoft ?

Dear  "mr_swe";

Mail me at nermo@online.no and I'll give you the
e-mail address of Gunnar Arneberg, who has been
in contact with NVIDIA Customer Support, where
he found that they are fully aware of the problem with
the new driver that was distributed by Windows Update.
(I seem to recall that they prescribed a remedy to cure
the illness ...)

I have the same problems described using explorer.exe that suddenly started happening and generating event 1002. I was excited to see your solution post as I do update Win 2000 regularly and it seemed it might be pointing to the culprit. But when I went to look for the file C/WINNT/SYSTEM32/nvtuicpl.cpl it wasn't there...if it's part of a windows update it should be, yes? Do you know what update it was so I can see if it is recorded somewhere in an update log? If you come across any other info, please let me know.

Thanks for any help...

Robert;

It would probably be the "NVIDIA display software update released on October 06 2003",
which shows in the Windows Update - Other Options - Show Installation Log
if you've chosen to install this update.

Depend on your installtion, maybe youll find the nvtuicpl.cpl file in another folder ?

It looks like the Windows 2000 Service Pack SP4 update has fixed the problem. Since installing the update, I haven't experienced the problem which had become a daily occurence...still less than a week but I'm putting the application through the paces and it hasn't generated the error again. I'm hopeful...by the way, the update is a huge set of fixes, probably the largest update I have done in the 1 1/2 years of using Win 2000 Pro.

Thanks for everyone's imput on this problem.

My solution was to uninstall the system mechanic incenerator.
Click the FILES button and click on Securely Delete Files and Folder. Click on Uninstall Incinerator and click Exit twice. Other version of System Mechanic might be different.

Having experienced the same problem, I was not even able to get onto my system.  If I had (and had the advance knowledge of what was found on the nvidia update), problem could have been solved.  All that being said, instead I chose to install Win2K again on the system.  No big deal and a few hours later all was back to normal.

However 1 thing that is a bit irrating is that I had to re-install the win2K with a new file name so now on start-up, I have 2 version of winnt to choose from.  The new one is fine, the old one still has the problem.  The file directory for my c: drive also shows both winnt folders (new and old).

My question, is it as easy to get rid of the old one as simply "deleting" the folder?  I'm almost afraid to try it for fear of messing up the other winnt version.  If not that easy, can it be deleted via dos using the del command?  And of course if none of the above, anyone have a method that's worked for them?

If your file system is NTFS then I usually use the NTSFDOS Pro program to gain access of my NTFS file system from DOS.  I would recommend to rename the folder first to make sure you rename the duplicate or old folder and reboot and see if the new OS still functions then go back to DOS using your NTFSDOS Pro and delete that old folder.

Hi there and thanks in advance!

I've had the same problems, deleted the "nvtuicpl.cpl" and Control Panel is now working, however, explorer.exe is still dead.

Please take note of the following:

1.- As I use another shell I was not aware of my problem UNTIL I tried to access my temporary files in IE6 Tools/Options/Config. Explorer.exe took forever and didn't load at all consuming all the CPU power (W2K PIII 1GHz 256MB).

2.- I went through a Windows Update patch installation the same week so I (apparently) was correct in my suspicions as I haven't installed anything else for weeks.

3.- Already run every major on-line anti-virus (I have Panda Platinum installed), Spybot and Ad-Aware, and found nothing.

Please forgive my English and thanks again.
