Hi Ganesh,

I know it's been awhile but I'm having similar problem with my laptop (Studio 1558, 64 bits, Window 7 Home Premium, Core i5, 6GB ram). Basically I'm trying to set my computer back to factory setting. I followed the exact direction that is written in the DELL setup guide.

I'm able to press F8 and get into advanced boot options. But when I click Repair your computer, there is a loading files scree appeared. Then it would just go straight to user log in page instead of allowing me to set thing back to factory setting. How should I resolve this? Thanks so much.

Hi thegameforme,

Welcome to the Community,

After you select Repair your Computer(on F8 screen) it will go to the login screen. Here you will have to select your user name(one which has the administrative credentials) and enter the password(if you don't use password to login leave it blank).

Let me know what are the options you get once you login after clicking on Repair (on F8 screen).

Thank You

Hi,

This method only works if you have PC Restore installed on your HD. If you don't, where can you download PC Restore in order to install it on your computer?

Start the system and tap F8 and choose Repair My Computer. If this option is missing, boot to WinRE using the Dell OEM DVD/CD.

Click Command Prompt on the System Repair options menu.

In the Command prompt window at the X:\sources prompt, Type path d:\windows;d:\windows\system32 and press key

Type d: and press key.

Type cd tools and press key.

Type PCRestore and press the key and Dell Factory Image Restore window will appear.

Just wanted to let you know, you can take the drive out, put it in another machine.  Copy imagex.exe from the waik to that machine.  And image the drive in the same way from a command prompt.  Not going to give detailed descriptions it's about the same but simpler.  You will need to take ownership of the recovery partition  and add permissions to get at the WIM file. Make sure you don't image the wrong drive! ;)

Hi Alberto, I know it has been a long time since you posted it, but I had to thank you for your help.

I was trying hard to recover my factory image with imagex ( i got a lot of info here too www.goodells.net/.../win7recovery.shtml) but I was getting the error "Specified image file did not contain a resource section".

Then I realized the recovery image was splited in 3 parts. I found you command line to merge them and it worked.

Thank you very very much for your message. You helped me a lot!

Cheers
