factory restore for dell studio 1558

HI guys...

I have problem in doing factory restore..

i mean initially i had 2 partition..

C drive and a RECOVERY drive.

by mistake i formatted C drive. i was left with no option as there was no any running OS present, so i installed windows 7.

But the recovery partiton was intact and untouched.

i want to now factory restore my laptop....

my problem is... when i press F8 and go to advanced boot menu, i select 'repair your computer'

than once the windows loads the files...

in recovery option i cannot see that 'dell image factory restore ' option.

is there any way how to get it back?

i mean certainly my recovery partition is perfectly undamaged.. which i can gaurantee.... so there must be come way.. either by command prompt or something that i can restore it back to original factory settings???

pll help me out with this issue.

The recovery is in a Windows image file created by ImageX.  You can prepare a Windows PE boot CD and use ImageX to restore it.

This isn't trivial to do, as you can see:

Prepare a bootable CD with ImageX  on it -- that will restore the file.

@ murthy511

ur CD works, but I think you forgot to mention I should first go to the CD drive (eg. E:) then type this code: " imagex /apply c:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 d: "

because otherwise the command prompt was always pointing at X:\Windows\System32\ and I always got the error "imagex " wasn't recognized.

It's taking about 9 mins on my dell studio 1558 ( Core i5, 4 GB DDR3)

thanks for the help anyway.

Hello ,
I talked to one of the technician on the toll free number yesterday the afternoon about the problem that i faced with dell dock and IDT software. I Formatted my laptop last week and I am not able to Use IDT as it is just gettin installed but i am not able to find the icon but if i go to the program files and then click the application of IDT, it automatically shows some error and it jus deletes some of the files and i have to manually install it again but the same problem occurs again. I have tried this many times. And secondly, i have problem in activating Dell Dock.I am able to install it but while starting the app its asking for the verification.  And as per the technician's advice i need to reinstall my OS. But now i remembered that when i was formatting my laptop last week, i accidentally deleted the OEM(Reserved) Partition without knowing about it. Is it because of that that i am not able to install this applications? What all things does this OEM partition contains? Is there any way of solving this problem?
    Looking forward to your reply,

So i tried to follow your guide, but unfortunately i am not a computer expert, so it didst went well.
If you could, i would really apreciate if you could make a guide to a rookie, that would be awesome.

Hi Ganesh

Great post, and the iso image really helped me a lot. I recently experienced this problem in a new XPS 15 and eventhough I had the recovery pen drive I was totally unable to recover the system.

I followed all the steps, but I found I also had to format the drive otherwise the imagex command will not even get to 1% progress.

After I format the drive the process went smoothly until it reached the 100% and then suddenly got the error:

seq 10 - Resource not found

After some forum reading, it came to the conclusion the image was actually split into three parts, therefore the following command worked smoothly,

E:\imagex /ref c:\dell\image\factory*.wim /apply c:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 d:

I found actully three image file in the c:\dell\image\ factory.wim, factory1.wim and factory2.wim.

After this everything worked except for the Factory Image Restore option in the Repair menu of the Advanced Boot Options, but this really does not bother me. By the way my OS is Window 7 Pro (64 bits).

@Murthy511.

Hey! Can you just wrap up and summarize everything. Cause it seems a bit messy around here.

Thanks.

@Murthy511

Boot system using the same disk and follow the steps

1.     Check C: drive is recovery partition  by going into C: and type dir

2.     if it is recovery partition(most probably, it will be),go to D: and check it, is OS partition

3.     it is OS partition(most probably, it will be), go to E:(your DVD drive)

4.     format D: drive   and

5.     type

imagex /apply c:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 d:

6.     wait until reaching 100 % (for me it took 6.32 minutes)

7.     type exit

8.     that’s it.

About these steps my OS is in the C: drive and my recovery is on some hidden drive and I don't know the letter. What should I do now?
