First, with a new hard drive, the Dell Diagnostics (F12) are no longer on the driver and the reason you can't access that.

Why would you replace the hardware because of a virus.  At worst you would just have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall.  The CD drive has nothing to do with the virus, a virus will not damage it.

HERE is the Dell XP install instructions, check them over to see if you are missing any steps.

Thanx. we figured it was a virus because little by little windows would freeze. to the point it would not let even reformat. then the cd driver would stop working when we would try to reinstall anything. figured what ever it was, was not letting us start over. hence, new hardware.   not sure if the msg: "error loading op system " has to do with the bios....still getting msg.   i have the h.d. set to master.  how do i know its seeing the h.d. and cd drive?
