how to remove all symantec files???

Hi
Hi when i click on norton 2005 to install it says that a previous version of norton is currently installed, although it has been uninstalled, so i suspect it is a registry problem? how would i go about deleting every norton file off my computer including from the registry and subsription files

thanks
and is it a hot key i need to delete?

Go here and enter ' RNAV '  and/or ' SYMCLN ' in the search box:

I had to do a reformat and re-installation to get rid of that pesky Nortons as well.....My new PC-Cillin internet security is rated better than Nortons and it never gave me problems when I uninstalled it like Nortons.  And, its not a resource hog either....

Unfortunately, me and several others on this forum have noted they had to do a "clean" reinatll to get rid of Norton completely.

One other thing you can do is edit the registry and remove any Norton or Symantic entries.  However, back up the registry first, if the registry gets messed up you could be looking at reinstallation.

I did the clean install the first time with Norton (I needed to do that anyway and it was something I was just putting off).  I then reinstalled Norton NIS 2005 and still had problems so I decided to dump Norton.  I did the registry editing, knowing I may still have to do another clean install but I got lucky and got rid of it.  I had to do that as my new Antivirus/Firewall suite was detecting Norton was still installed even tho it had been uninstalled.

It is not clear from the original post in this thread which Norton product you have a previous (or current) version of, but there are multiple removal tools on the Symantec site for various Norton products and versions.

The SYMCln file description linked below indicates it will not remove all trace of Norton, only certain components of NSW 2003 and earlier.

There MAY be a solution (other than registry editing or a clean system reinstall) to the original problem posted, but the removal process and selection of appropriate tool(s) would likely be critical, and success may be elusive at best.

As fireberd noted, if you elect to perform registry editing to follow up after failure of the automated removal tools, you will need to search the registry and remove whatever relevant components you can find, and there may be relevant registry entries that are not immediately apparent. This may lead to success, but success may be elusive with this method also.

Hi
Thanks for the ideas

i thought it was almost at the point when i was thinking of reinstalling windows ha!!!.... i deleted all the norton, semantecs registry idems and it was still trying to open the windows installer when i right clicked in any folder... not even regitry fix programs that found errors fixed it, so i installed the old 2003 and then uninstalled it and not the new norton version works and installed without saying errors,

so i guess the lession is norton 2005 isn't very good!!!!! even though it installed without errors windows installer after the first restart said it needed to be reinstalled and all the issues arose from there..

and any of you have an ideas on AVG virus scanner? thanks ,

I now use AVG and like it. Nav 2003 is still used for e-mail scanning only.

When my Norton 2003 subscription runs out, it's PC-Cillin or AVG for me.  Luckily, the 2003 version is not a resource hog.

AVG is an excellent virus scanner.

It isn't necessary/required to uninstall NAV2003 (or NAV2004) prior to installing NAV2005 - it does it for you per the NAV 2005 install instructions, bottom of page 8/last paragraph (and from personal experience on 2 home computers). You DO have to uninstall NAV versions 2002 and earlier prior to installing NAV2005.
