installing, accessing and using the Windows Recovery Console

I created a CD Containing My Operating System with the Dell™ OS Recovery Utility (Dimension 4700C Windows XP Professional. I wanted to access the Windows Recovery Console. One set of instructions directed me to click start run and then enter an address on the CDRW drive.
The operation started ok but before it could complete, the error 'Setup information file D:\i386\COMPDATA\NTCOMPAT.INF is invalid. Contact your system administrator' popped up and the next message said installation failed. Is it a bad CD or what?

Thank You

brunetto,

Did you follow these steps?

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your drive.

2. At a command prompt, type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons (replacing d with the letter of your CD drive).

3. A Windows Setup message appears, describing the Recovery Console option.

4. Click Yes to install the console.

The next time you start your computer, you’ll see a "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" entry on the boot menu.

Yes Denny Denham,

I used the procedure you described, but before initial setup completed, error messageSetup information file D:\i386\COMPDATA\NTCOMPAT.INF is invalid. displayed. This was followed by installation did not complete. I never even got to the screen for the recovery console.
