G'day mate,

Since you list your system as 4.10.1998, I think that you want the 4.10.1210.0 that is "in the WIN98_36CAB folder of a Windows 98 Upgrade CD shipped with my Dell in April ’98." Is this not the same CD that you used for your reinstallation? You should be able to check this at the Microsoft dll website, to see if in fact the 1210 version is the correct version for the 1998 system. (My own system is 2222A, and it calls for the 4.2.2209.0. So these differences are apparently very important.)

Use your System File Checker, and point the extraction location from the WIN98_36CAB, using your Upgrade CD, into the destination C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.

If you are asked to replace an existing file, click YES.

You might first try running oleacc.dll in the Find Files & Folders to see if there is anything currently installed on your computer. Perhaps it is corrupted. If this is the case, then when you run your SFC, it should advise you that your existing file is corrupted and/or damaged; and it will then ask you to perform what I have suggested above.

How have you attempted to copy the example that you cited that did not work?

Thankx for your good reply. In fact, I had a moment of success, after realizing I had neglected to open the file I was copying INTO! Once I copied the version 1210 oleacc.dll into the sytem folder (correctly) the regsvr32 process worked fine.
Then my desired EarthLink e-mail client and networking all seemed willing to function, for a while. But now I'm experiencing some hideous IE problem where the browser takes longer and longer to boot and then functions sluggishly if at all, and at present I cannot get a good IP address, using WINIPCFG: when I click on "Release All" nothing happens.

Can I beg you to consider another problem? In any case, thanks again for your first intervention.

G'day Peekko!

That's an ace on the oleacc eh, but I'm sorry to hear that you're having a blue with I.E.

Have a go at this (and in this order):

1. Internet Explorer|Tools|InternetOptions. Clear everything--cookies, files, offline content, History. Before you clear your cookies though, export them to a saver folder so you can return them later; it's a nasty if you delete your very important cookies. Backup your most important history too; if you have URLs that have not been bookmarked, then give them some serious thought.

2. Start|Programs|Accessories|SystemTools|DiskCleanup. Clear everything. Again, keep in mind the most important Downloadable Programs so that you do not need to redownload--and check your Recycle Bin before you have a go at that.

3. Start|Programs|Accessories|SystemTools|DiskDefragmenter|settings. Set your selection for "rearranging" and for "checking the drive for errors." Note: check the box for "this time only"--the defrag will take much longer because of the scan for errors. So walk away.

4. Run your spyware remover tool.

5. Run your anti-virus tool.

6. Reboot.

7. Start|Programs|Accessories|SystemTools|SystemInformation|
Tools|InternetExplorerRepairTool
(This can be found also under the ControlPanel|Add/Remove|
MicrosoftInternetExplorer...andTools|Add/Remove|Repair).

8. After IE reboots itself, then go to your System File Checker and run. If anything disrupts the scan, click "ignore" and make a written copy of the "details" (at the end) so that you can begin dealing with whatever happens.

If your browsing is still too slow, then begin checking your running programs against your use of resources, by accessing System Information's Software Environment "running tasks". Eliminate the unncessary.

9. Perform an operation such as the above regularly, depending upon your internet activity.

It's almost Twelver here now, in Lake Yammy Yammy, so I've got to go middy before I get nuddy in Never Never.

Going off,

ThSQ

OK Thanks so much ThsQ.

I'll report back when IE is fixed up. But isaved your fine instructions to clean-up. Currently I'm getting the Google start page (my starter), but it won't download the .gif for that colorful logo, and it won't really open any pages effectively.

You go sleep and I'll pop over to my neighbor (exMelbourne) and get some translation software (but I got the gist).

Best to you there.
