Just in case someone needing this answer actually stops by to read it. I thought Mr. Goodells dsrfix program fixed the partition. In fact it did not. I found this out after calling dell tech support and hearing the tech suggest that I upgrade ram for win 7, oh and I probably need a new HDD. Well I have recently dl'd  an iso of Ubuntu 10.11. So wtf I installed it. And with barely any complaints it did install -on the same part that should have had win xp. So then I installed xp over that And sure enough the install finished. Six or eight devices broken but it did install. Huh, Ubuntu puts one in the win column.

Thanks but I have used "Dell MediaDirect Repair Utility " As I understand it if I use ms fixmbr, than I cannot use the dell recovery partition.

So my choices are; boot from HDD where it will POST and then hang at "loading PBR descriptor 2.. done" or.

boot to restore partition by pressing cntrl+f11 during POST, where I can Reboot or Restore (to factory settings).

If I select the restore option it loads the symantic ghost 8.3 splash screen, but the instant it is fully drawn on the screen. The screen goes black with the words ABORT: 36000, A General Exception occurred.

A second later it's a blue screen with a window that says

"The system recovery process was not successful.

Please call dell tech support for assistance.

Caution do not manually shut down your computor. Click the Finish button to reboot.

So have I misunderstood something? Or left out a step?  I used the "Dell MediaDirect Repair Utility " again and I am sure I followed the steps correctly. And I'm pretty sure doing that twice did not help.
