if you have windows xp you might want to try a system restore.

A couple of possible solutions.

1. Restore the folder(s) from the Recycle Bin.

2. Run this command from Start|Run:

sfc /scannow (note space after the "sfc")

Sorry, no guarantees on either working.

uncertain the best course so far. trying to detect the nuances between the install shield client(folder), the install shield engine and the windows installer. my first thinking on it after some reading is there may be a separate setup for this on the cd (haven't checked yet) OR, and more than likely this will need a Repair Install at the very least-possibly a re-install (aka overinstall) of xp. I believe that's still an option but it will leave your computer in a mess. will get back to you if I come up with something definite.

You might look at

perhaps this particular page

which suggests things to download to update (or in your case get back) some of the files that you deleted, such as the engine and drivers.

I don't know if that would work, as I have not come accross this problem before

I've done a fair amount of reading and some tinkering and still don't have a firm grip on this. Perhaps running the ikernel.exe file will flesh out the whole InstallShield folder (files); then again it may just update the engine.

Wish I had caught your bleepingcomputer thread with the error message; would have been helpful from the start. Will give some extra time on it.

I did delete the folder in question and, after reboot, installed and uninstalled both .exe and .msi installations. Apparently the folder can be deleted without problem; your error message will help with the solution. Could be a no-brainer but it'll take me more time.

JRosenfeld, if you get any ideas jump in.

I couldn't come up with a definitive answer ( eg installing ikernel.exe, registry edit, combo, etc ) so I'll have to pass. Perhaps someone on the installshield site can be of help. It's very possible that a Repair Install would fix this. I believe that this can be fixed without resorting to the Repair but...

I don't know if you can do much more damage to the install shield 'component' by trying some of the downloads mentioned in this thread but I've been wrong before. If you give it a go back up your data, preferences, etc and set a restore point first. If you go the Repair route make sure you read the links below. You may want to repost your problem and hope for some fresh ideas before going any further. Also, if you have added SP2 to your system you may have to slipstream it with your original XP cd in order to do the Repair. Check it out.

Thanx for considering my problem and putting in the time and effort to help me solve this. I really appreciate you guys helping me out like this. I think i might have an idea on whats going on, but its just a shot in the dark and im not sure if this is the problem or not. so here it goes.. Ive installed the files from the installshield website, for the version 11(http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322, the one at the bottom of this page) which i have and i think(just a guess) it replaced everything i deleted. It installed the Isscript.msi files and the engines and everything. SO i think it completely replaced all the files that were deleted, but im not sure on that because I didn't know which files were in the folder to begin with. I just know that the folder was deleted and i dont know which files were in that folder so whether it replaced ALL the files i will never know. But i think it installed everything i needed whether it is the bare bones minimum or not. I can now install programs, i have installed a few already and everything works fine, no error messages. Except, the one program that wont install is the new version of itunes, version 5. But i looked into it and the itunes version 5 is very flawed and tons of people are having trouble with it. So i think its the actual itunes program and not my computer because that is the only program that i still get the error message with and cant install. So hopefully, i think i have all the installshield stuff that i need and its just itunes giving me trouble. Does that sound like a logical theory,or do you think that this problem with itunes is still being caused by the installshield files that were deleted? They are supposed to have another version of itunes ready by this week i heard, and all the errors with it will be fixed and it will have all the patches and what not. so hopfully this corrected version of itunes comes out soon so i can put my theory to the test and see if it really was the itunes causing the problem or not.

I am glad that worked (except for iTunes: I don't have that, but what you say seems plausible that it's just a bad file since everything else installs OK).

Looking at my C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver folder, it has several subfolders, called 7, 8, 9, 11, each of those has an intel subfolder with some .dll and one or more IDriver exe files. I guess that these correspond to different versions of the installshield drivers that have accumulated on my system at different times. I think that later versions would be backward compatible (i.e. able to install software that was packaged with earlier versions of Installshield), so if you just have 11 that should be fine.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine has just one subfolder called 6 (again presumably referring to the version number), which also has a subfolder called Intel which contain the kernel files.

The other subfolders in C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield are \IScript (with just one file: Iscript.dll), \Professional, \UpdateService and \Webupdate. \Professional has subfolders again labelled by number; \UpdateService has a subfolder called Images.  I don't know what their function is nor when they were created. You could check to see if you have those, if so they were part of the packages you installed. If not, my advice would be not to worry, since you have restored the functionality :-).

Im hopin everything is fixed and it is just the itunes. whenever i get the rerelease of itunes v.5 im hoping that that will install without problems. Ill keep you posted to let you know if itunes was the problem, and if the most current release of it installs correctly whenever it comes out.
