I use a program from http://www.lavasoft.de/ called "Ad-Aware". It works like antivirus but for spyware. They have a free download of it with updates and it has saved me from many hijackings. All you do is do a system scan once a week (or so) and it will detect and delete spyware.

Also check out http://www.grisoft.com for a free anti-virus called AVG. It has free updates as well and I like much more than Norton. Its not as resource hungry as norton and seems to be more reliable in catching things. They usually update the virus definitions every day so its looking for plenty of stuff out there.

All these programs are free and give them a try to help battle viruses and spyware. There is also a free firewall called ZoneAlarm from http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp that many people like. Its a little hard to find now but check the site out, its there.

These should help you in viruses/spyware and all are free. You don't have to run a firewall if you don't want to, its just another safety measure. But definitely have an anti-virus program and a spuware program forsure, it will make your life easier!

Spyware - Because its not just big brother any more. Be aware of what is running on your computer, what it is doing, who put it there, why they put it there and if they had the right to put it there.
