lsass.exe status code 128

not sure if first message came through...

I just installed windows 2000 pro on my inspiron 4000 and everything works great until I connect to the internet. A few minutes after I connect (time varies from 1 to 5...never more than 5) a windows pops up saying "unexpected problem with lsass.exe status code 128, windows will shut down in 60 seconds.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks a lot..dq1

dq1,

That's a symptom of the "Sasser" worm. Please see this Symantec article for a description and removal instructions, and this Microsoft article for critical updates that your system apparently does not have installed.

You should consider installing firewall protection for your network. See the last two links listed below under "Network Safety" for reasons why this is very important.

Thank you very much jimw...Not sure whether I cleaned the virus or not since all the utilities I downloaded could not find anything but I created a log file as described on the microsoft site link you provided me and I now can logon to the internet without getting re-booted.

Again....thank you for your time.
