microsoft system management bios driver
I recently installed sp2, only to have it cause a ton of problems. I ended up having to do a repair from the windows cd to make my computer even usable. But now in my device manager I have a yellow exclamation mark by "microsoft system management bios driver". It won't let me update it or anything. I believe this is causing some other problems that my pc is having. Does anyone have any clue how to fix this? Please Help!!!!!

I'm having the same exact problem on my Dimension 4550.
SP2 install failed...windows wouldn't do a thing until I did a Console Recovery. Now It hangs on the "Windows is starting up" screen for a good minute or 2, so I'm trying to isolate the problem, and this driver appears to maybe have something to do with it.
I updated from A01 to A08 in the process of trying to do SP2

Already repair installed and re-installed SP1. It was still there, so I simply deleted it. Surprisingly, It hasn't come back, however the system still hangs doing nothing (no HD activity) when the "Windows is starting..." screen is up for a good minute before getting me to the login screen.

On My Inspiron 8200 I have the same "Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver" yellow flag in Devise manager menu, and only after I installed SP2. I am running Bios A11 and have all (and I mean all) driver updates from this site. It says that the drivers are not installed or maybe they are corrupt. I believe its causing me to have no audio whatsoever. I have lost functionality on the onboard touchpad and mouse buttons. Widows network connection wizar gives me error711: "A configuration error on this computer is preventing this connection...." when I try to make a new conection for my DSL ISP I also have a hang time after botting on the "welcome" screen. It is all driveng me nuts!
Do you have yet a solution you'd like to share?
Thanks

Can you clarify? Should I attempt an uninstall of SP2 before reinstalling SP1? Or does only a reinstall of SP1 overwrite SP2? I'm currently in limbo at the moment wondering what I should do...
My experience so far: Windows Explorer desktop would fail to run. Running in Safe Mode under administrator still failed to get into the desktop.
I did a "repair" using the WindowsXP disk. During installation, online activation failed to find my modem and failed to connect. I had to make a phone call to Microsoft to enter a manual activation code.
Soundblaster card failed to install properly, causing Windows to lock up (requiring reboot) on any application using sound. A reinstall of the driver fixed this.
Noticed the yellow exclamation point in Windows BIOS.
Tried to set up a modem connection. Network Connection setup found my LAN configuration, but failed to find my dialup modem. All options to set up a dial-up connection are greyed out and unselectable, very weird. System manager detects my modem just fine with no conflicts. Scratching my head on this one...
Clicking on any of the new SP2 control file icons (Security, Firewall) causes an immediate Windows crash and lockup.
Good news through all of this...my Linux partition still works flawlessly :)
