You will have to "associate" the .doc file extension with MS Word.  How you do that depends on what Operating System you have.  If you have Vista or Windows 7, click on start then "Default Programs"  then click "Set your Default Programs" (Make a program the default for all file types and protocols it can open).  You may also have to associate the doc file type with Word and that is done in the same panel under "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".   Under XP it the file association method is different - use the Windows XP help to find out how to associate a file type.
