thanks but curious what the recovery cd is all about.
we were given a windows98 microsoft cd, a microsoft
windows 98 boot disk and a dell dimension resource cd.
where can we get a recovery cd????

There is no such thing as a recovery CD for a Dell system. What you have is sufficient for reinstalling your operating system and your drivers. You should, of course, back up all perishable data before doing this. After you complete the operation you will have a close approximation to the state your computer was in when you received it.

You can make a win98 bootable floppy.
Start->Setting->Control Panel->Add/Remove Program->Startup Disk and then create disk.(from some other system)
Boot your system with this floopy.It ask for whether start with CD-ROM support .Select the option .
When A:\> prompt come type setup.exe at this but before this insert the win98 CD in the CD-ROM.It Start your installation process and then follow it.
