my "search" function does not work

i clicked on "search" from the xp start menu and not only does it fail to bring up a search window, but the computer freezes up for about 30 seconds and then resumes full functionality but still no search window. do i need to re-load windows xp? can i just re-load the "search.exe(?)" file? this is happening on my fathers brand new dell and i am sure there is some type of warranty and/or support number, but i thought i would try here in the mean time. i don't want him to be discouraged with his first computer. he is 70 yrs. old and he has no time for problems like this! thank you for any advice. eric

p.s. i also tried accessing the search function from a couple other places besides the "start menu"....same problem.

ejprojects,

This is from Kellys-korner.com, a superb reference for XP troubleshooting:

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.
