no start menu or icons

Question

hello, i came to my computer today and it turned on fine, i put my password in and that worked fine but when everything loaded only my background showed up. No start menu or icons. i have an inspiron e1505 and i have restared it, and turned in on many times. if someone could please help that would be great! thank you!
