I recently bought and installed NAV 2006 and removed it within the same hour. It slowed IE to a crawl at best. Sites wouldn't open, programs hung forever without opening, etc. I used the above link to remove it completely and rebooted at least two times to get everything back to normal. No Norton ever again.

I think that if you update your Live update to the latest version (3.0.106) it should restore functionality.
Otherwise, try to install the latest virus update from your hard drive, that will probably correct any corruption in the definition files themselves as the package downloaded from that site is cumulative *as opposed to the incremental updates that you get through Live update).
