Thank you for the reply.

I am unable to even get to my desktop to get the the Control Panel.  The blue screen appears when I turn my computer on.  It is unable to go away. Any suggestions?

Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup & Recovery/Settings. Set "write debugging information" to “NONE” and uncheck "automatically restart".

Also go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer/System log and look for errors (Red)

We need an 8-digit blue screen error number to help determine the actual error  Do you see a number like this?

Can you give more info on the error message.  Is there a "Stop" message or an 8 digit number.  ANY/ALL  information you can give will help identify the problem

If you can't get through that blue screen, on startup, do you ever see your dell screen where you can choose your boot means, Such as safe mode? I believe you get to it by pressing F8 right before the Dell screen.  If you are ever able to get to the Windows Screen, or to a DOS prompt, do the following:

I, too, had this situation myself.  I found a way to get around it and clean up the mess quickly so that I could get into windows.  When you get back into windows, let the message sit there. and do the following:

1. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Windows Explorer (or go to wherever you have a link to your windows explorer).

2. When in Windows Explorer, navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\YOUR LOGIN\Temp.  (HINT: After experiencing this once, I created a desktop link to my temp folder, made it easier to navigate to the next time it happened)

3. Delete everything you can inside that temp folder.  Once you have done that, you should be able to navigate and close all of the messages related to the error.  Then you can take the steps referred to in the last poster's messages.  Hope this helps.  If you get stuck, email me.

Hi,

I've been getting the same error message, although it is very random (every other session) and I can still get back to Windows after it happens.

This is what my error message reads on a blue screen:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X80520EA7, 0XF2827CAC, 0X00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support for further assistance."

This is getting really bad and I would really appreciate any help, as Dell technical support is very hard to get in touch with over the phone.

Please help!

Thanks,

Arnaud

Hi,

STOP: 0x0000008E is usually an indication of RAM problems ,You might like to swap your sticks around or if you have more that 1 stick of 256MB, take one out and see if fixed.  If not swap over and run with just the other one. This will identify a faulty stick.

OR

Download this free tester to a floppy and run it.  It can take a while
http://www.memtest86.com/

You have not said how much RAM you have.   XP needs at least 256MB and runs better with 512MB
