Are you up to date on Windows updates?

Do you have this update installed? See if it corrects the issue.

With the pen drive plugged in go to device manager, are there any errors in the usb section?
If not go to Disk management, can you see the drive in there?

I downloaded that update, no difference. I get a message tell me that driver software was found, but an error during install prevented operation.. The driver installation file is missing a necessary entry, supposedly because the INF was written for Win95 or later.. contact the hardware vendor.. this unit fired right up on my new laptop with vista prem, no prob.. It does show up in device manager as "other devices, unknown device".. I just deleted it out of there

man, sometimes my brain doesn't see the forest for the trees.. I went searching in the laptop for the driver(s) the flash drive was using, copied them over to the system32 drivers folder and presto-change-o-domino(credit 3 stooges), it works

That is a new technique. Where did you find the drivers to copy?

They're in C:\windows\system32\drivers\UMDF\....... in my laptop, the file is: WpdFs.dll, windows portable system file device driver.. my Dell desktop had a driver file also in the same folder, different name. I just copied the laptop driver on a floppy and dumped it into the desktop unit UMDF folder, then ran the re-install, set it to search the C:\windows\system32 folder..weird, both systems are Vista prem, different files, maybe one is updated file, I don't know,, little bugger works like a charm now after much angst
